The Vacancy
About Us As M+H Learning Programme of the Year 2024, The Formal Learning team delivers ambitious, high-quality programmes for c.40,000 learners each year, from EYFS to University level, including those in home or alternative education. Our programme is engaging, learner-led, and constantly evolving, making the most of our sector-leading Handling Collection, and learning from the colleagues and communities we work with.
About the Role As Learning and Handling Collection Assistant, you will be integral to the operational delivery of our schools and home education programmes. You will ensure our busy learning programme operates smoothly, greeting school groups when they first arrive at the Museum, and proactively seek to improve the experience of learners through information and resource development, and on-going evaluation. You will also deliver virtual workshops to school groups across the UK! You will also be trained to lead on the documentation, development and research of the Horniman’s renowned Handling Collection- one of the biggest in the UK- of around 3,500 objects. You will work with colleagues across teams, supported directly by the Senior Curator of Social Practice, to widen access to the collection, and to improve our understanding of the objects we hold through projects with curatorial colleagues, learners, researchers and communities.
This role also has significant opportunities for development and is a brilliant role for someone early in their career to explore and gain experience and training in a range of Museum skills and areas, from learning delivery to collections work, to social practice.
Hours of work: 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday, typically starting at 9am
Key Responsibilities Operational support of the Formal Learning programme (40%) • Welcome and brief groups of learners and accompanying adults to a high standard • Assist with the set up and pack down of objects, equipment and education spaces. This involves moving furniture, pushing trolleys, and handling objects including taxidermy. • Liaise with wider teams to ensure the smooth running of our programme • Support the delivery of projects with targeted audiences, including the School Holiday Clubs programme and Home Education work • Independently deliver virtual workshops for learning audiences (with training)
The Handling Collection documentation and management (35%) • Lead on the documentation of the Handling Collection, working closely with Collections and Documentation colleagues and curators to clean, record and share information • Administer the Handling Collection acquisitions, disposals and loans processes and oversee the adherence to Handling Collection Policy and Procedure guidelines • Ensure due diligence in the disposal and acquisition of objects, in liaison with curatorial teams, specialists and community members • Lead the Handling Collection group, develop the collection’s content, storage, and display • Plan and manage the delivery of the annual Handling Collection audit • With the wider Content team, participate in the care of the Handling Collection
Evaluation of the Formal Learning programme (5%) • Support with the evaluation of the Formal Learning programme, gathering and cleaning qualitative and quantitative data • Carry out evaluation in partnership with the wider team and external evaluation consultants • Compile evaluation reports on Formal Learning programming and projects
Handling Collection Development work (20%) • Identify priority areas for research of the Handling Collection in partnership with the Formal Learning and wider Content Team • Proactively develop and improve the documentation and research of the Handling Collection in partnership with the Formal Learning and wider Content Team, community partners, student placements and volunteers • Advocate for the Handling Collection, and increase knowledge and understanding of the collection both internally and externally • Support the wider Content and Museum Teams to utilise the Handling Collection in their work
About You We are looking for someone who is eager to learn, who shares our passion for connecting learners to collections, commitment to community-led practice, and drive to decolonise Museums. At the heart of your work must be the drive to ensure equitable access to Museums for all children and young people.

Wifi and CCTV service
Free wifi access is available throughout the Horniman. If you access the wifi network, you will be asked to agree to the Horniman’s wifi terms and conditions of use, which provide information about how your data will be used.
If you do not use the free wifi network but you have wifi enabled on your smartphone, tablet or another internet-enabled device, your device can still be detected by the wifi service. We record data about the location and type of devices in the Horniman that have wifi enabled so that we can monitor the flow of visitors around the Horniman, and to improve our services.
We will not link the anonymous device data with any other personal data that identifies you individually without your express permission. If in future we want to process your data in this way to offer you new services, before doing so we will always ask you if you agree to take part.

Job and volunteering opportunities
If you apply to work at the Horniman Museum and Gardens, we will only use the information you give us to process your application and to monitor recruitment statistics. If we want to disclose information to someone outside the Horniman– e.g., if we need a reference, plan to use an external supplier to run background checks, need to get a ‘disclosure’ from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) or check that you are legally entitled to work in the UK - we will make sure we tell you beforehand, unless we are prevented from disclosing this information by law.

How we store your data and for how long
We hold your personal information in accordance with the security provisions of the UK Data Protection legislation and in accordance with our Data retention guidelines.
We use industry standard Secure Server Software (SSL) for your electronic transactions with us. It encrypts all of your personal information, including credit card number, name, and address, so that it cannot be read as the information travels over the Internet.

Financial Information
If you use your credit or debit card to donate to us, buy something or pay to register your place at an event online or over the phone, we will ensure that this is done securely and in accordance with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard. This is the international standard for safe card payment processes. Our online payment solutions are carried out using a 'payment gateway' which is a direct connection to a payment service provided by a bank. This means that when you input card data into the payment page, you are communicating directly with the bank and the bank passes your payment to us. This means that your payment card information is handled by the bank and not processed or held by us.
Following the completion of your transaction, we do not store your credit or debit card details. All card details and validation codes are securely destroyed once the payment or donation has been processed. Only staff authorised and trained to process payments will be able to see your card details.
All purchases or donations other than those made onsite, should be completed through the Horniman webshop or donation pages on our website (horniman.ac.uk). If we do receive an email containing any credit or debit card details, it will be deleted immediately once the transaction has been completed. We use SagePay, Ingenico, Stripe and PayPalas our payment gateways and you can find out more about this at SafePay security,Ingenico’sTerms of Use,Stripe security, and PayPal’s user agreement. The Horniman has Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificates installed on the website and webshop to ensure that information sent between the site and the payment processing servers is encrypted.
We use some automated screening tools as part of this application process. The answers you provide to one or more of the questions (excluding any special categories/equal opportunity questions) may result in your application being automatically declined. This technology is used to help us manage the high volume of applications we receive and can assure applicants the same outcome would occur if we manually reviewed your application. The reason for the decline will be made available to you in your candidate account.
Your rights of access
